The Gift of Creativity Returning

Yesterday I had my first of 12 calls to write my one-woman show. We had blocked an hour, but it only took 27 minutes to come up with a great outline. It was flowing. It was so much fun, totally energizing, and exciting. I got off the phone and felt so good.
Alison Wonder, my amazing coach for the one-woman show, immediately asked me to go back on zoom to just do a little analysis of our time together. We were laughing about how easy it had been, and we both acknowledged that every call may not be like that some days, creativity is sluggish and difficult, especially when you’re getting down to final editing.
The creative process is endlessly fascinating to me. Some things can be so easy - writing has always come easily for me, while singing, which is my passion, is much more complex, and I find myself resisting far more often than I would like.
I’ve talked to many artist and creatives over the years about their creative process and how they handle resistance. It’s an endlessly fascinating subject. At some point, I’d love to do a show or a book or maybe a podcast about that subject.
For today, I’m just grateful that my creativity is flowing. I started this year completely shut down in that space. It’s very challenging to think that it may never come back, to wonder if you want it back, to wake up every day in a grey fog and sit in front of a blank page with no words. (You begin to understand the movie, The Shining, in a new way).
If you’re struggling with your creativity and being shut down right now, I encourage you to hold on and to look at what you need to change in your circumstances to allow the muse back in. Small, simple changes can make all the difference, but sometimes it takes rethinking your life on a grand scale.
Hold onto your faith and remember the best is always yet to come!
